Links field

The Issue Link Guard – Links field lets users manage all links of an issue from the issue's fields, and choose links already while creating an issue. It follows the project's link rules.

Adding the field (Jira administrator)

1. In Jira admin settings → Work items → Fields, create a custom field of the type Issue Link Guard – Links. You can give it any name.
2. Add the field to the screens the project uses: the create screen, if users should choose links while creating issues, and the edit and view screens.

A field appears on issues only when it is on the project's screens. Creating the field alone is not enough.

Optionally, in the field's context configuration, set Text shown on the issue view (up to 100 characters). Leave it empty to show the default text, "Manage links", in each user's language.

On the issue view

The field shows a short text, by default "Manage links". Select it to open the link window, the same window as in the side panel: all links of the issue as tiles grouped by link type, with search, × to remove and Save (+N / −M).

Like any Jira field, the field can be edited only by users who can edit the issue.

When you close the field after saving changes, the issue page reloads once, so Jira's own "Linked work items" section shows the new links.

On the create screen

Users can choose links before the issue exists:

1. In the field, choose a link type and search for an issue.
2. Pick the issue. It is added as a tile. Repeat for more links.
3. Select Create.

The links are created a few seconds after the issue is saved. Because no user is signed in at that point, the app's account creates them, after checking:

• the project's link rules for the person who created the issue,
• that this person can view the target issue,
• if the project does not use the technical account, that this person has "Link Issues".

If a link cannot be created, the new issue's activity log shows it as Link not created, with the reason.

The field's value only carries the list of links to create. The app clears it once the links have been created.
